Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a flowering plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, the roots of which are very widely used as a spice in South Asian and Middle Eastern cooking.
It has been also been used in India for thousands of years as a dye (colouring) and medicinal herb.

Turmeric contains compounds with medicinal properties which are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin.
Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.

Curcumin is what gives turmeric root its beautiful yellow-orange color.
